In Town of Salem, there are two types of points which players may earn. These points allow players to purchase items from the in-game shop such as avatars, houses, villages, pets, death animations, and theme packs. Players may notice that most items cost four times as many Merit Points as Town Points, and not all items may be purchased using Merit Points (such as items found only in theme packs and items which are new). As some items become older, they will be available to purchase using Merit Points. The amount of points that one has can be checked in the top right of the home screen, where Town Points appear as gold coins and Merit Points as silver coins. In the image above, the ones on the left are Town Points, whilst the ones on the right are Merit Points.
Merit Points
Merit Points were introduced in Version 1.5.9 when they became the main currency for Town of Salem. The following are the ways players may earn these points:

Note: Players who have linked their Town of Salem account to the Steam version of the game will automatically earn double the number of Merit Points listed above, even if the player is not playing on Steam.
